Not everyone has a perfect eye for interior design, yet we all try our best to make our homes comfortable and welcoming for our family and guests. Here are some common decorating mistakes that many people make, and what you can do to avoid them.
1. Making a Small Room Feel Small
One common thing homeowners do without realizing it is making a small room feel even smaller. Cluttering a small room with oversized furniture or knick-knacks, or using dark wall colors, can make a room feel cramped. Instead, use appropriate-sized furniture, keep accessories to a minimum, and select light and airy colors to make the room feel larger.
2. Creating a Theme Room
Another common mistake is trying to create a theme room. While this may seem like a good idea, especially if you are trying to keep things cohesive, there is a down side to it. Your room can feel dated the second that theme goes out of style. Then, unfortunately, you have to replace everything. Instead, try to use accessories that represent the theme and style you like, while keeping everything else neutral. This helps you easily switch things up in the future without having to do a major overhaul each time.
3. Avoiding Patterns
When you are looking to decorate or style your home, you may intentionally avoid patterns. Many people think that patterns are too bold, or they are scared to use them. However, selecting one large, patterned item for your space, such as a throw rug, comforter, or armchair, can really add a lot of style and design to your space. Try to add in a patterned item, rather than avoiding it.
4. Relying Solely on Overhead Lighting
Overhead lighting can make your space feel one-dimensional and may not fully illuminate your space. Instead, add in a mixture of different light types, including floor lamps, table lamps and/or sconces.
5. Not Mixing Things Up
The last mistake that people make when decorating their home is being afraid to mix things up! Some people use the same color throughout their space or the same texture. One of the keys to making your space lively and inviting is by using contrast. Use different colors, textures, and, as mentioned above, throw in a patterned item. Everything looks monotone and way too matchy-matchy if you stick to the same color and textures.
